September is Hunger Action Month

What does it feel like to have an empty stomach, and how does that impact your ability to accomplish what you need to do in your daily life?

Maybe it makes it harder to focus on or complete tasks at home or at work, more difficult to study at school, harder to cope with the kids, or makes you cranky with others.

For 1 in 7 people nationwide, that feeling of an empty stomach is not occasional - it's the reality.

September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign to help the public realize that people who are hungry are people who cannot reach their full potential.

The campaign, held by Feeding America, the nation's largest network of food banks, including the Harry Chapin Food Bank, aims to mobilize the public to take action against hunger.

Orange is the color for Hunger Action Month and we invite you to wear it often. The focal point of the month is Hunger Action Day on Sept. 14, but the Harry Chapin Food Bank has a calendar full of ways you can take action against hunger throughout the month, both large and small.

The symbol for Hunger Action Month is an empty plate. We invite you to take a selfie, or email photos of you and your friends or family holding a paper plate, completing the sentence: "On an empty stomach, I can't ___________." On the other side, complete the sentence "But I can _____________ to help end hunger."

Email them to us at fighthunger@harrychapinfoodbank.org We'll share the photos on Facebook and on our website!

During Hunger Action Month, we encourage people in the community to participate in the fight against hunger. Print the Hunger Action Month calendar, which includes daily activities that bring awareness to the issue of hunger in our community.

Your donations help us feed hungry people in our community. The Harry Chapin Food Bank can turn $1 into $8 of food because we rescue food that would otherwise go to waste. This is food that may not meet retail standards because of minor blemishes, but is perfectly good to eat.

By posting about Hunger Action Month on social media, you are helping to deliver an important message to the community. We serve approximately 28,000 people per week in Southwest Florida who are struggling with hunger.

Collect and donate food or funds to the Harry Chapin Food Bank during Hunger Action Month to make an impact on our community. Download the food drive informational packet below.

Arrange a day in September to volunteer at the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Help us sort high-demand non-perishable items. You can also encourage others to volunteer, or even get a team together. Download the application below.

Our lives are to be used and thus to be lived as fully as possible, and truly it seems that we are never so alive as when we concern ourselves with other people.
